Free Digital Art Competitions: Open Calls and AI Rules

Digital art spent two decades asking to be taken seriously and then, almost overnight, became the most argued-about medium in the field. The argument is about AI, and it has split the competition landscape in two: calls that treat generative tools as a medium to be judged, and calls that restrict or ban them. For a digital artist in the 2027 cycle, reading a competition's AI policy is now as basic as reading its deadline.

This guide covers how the policies differ and which digital-art competitions are worth planning around, using only what each organiser publishes on its own page. Policies are being rewritten yearly — always read the current rules, not last year's summary.

The three AI policies, and how to read them

  • AI as medium. Generative work is eligible and judged as itself, usually with mandatory disclosure of tools and process. The jury's question shifts from "did you make this?" to "is the authorship meaningful?" — curation, datasets, iteration and intent are what score.
  • AI as assistant. The commonest 2026–27 position: AI may assist, but the work must not be created solely by it, and the artist must explain where and why the tools were used. Application forms increasingly ask for this directly: the Aion Digital Art Prize's form asks entrants who used AI to explain how and for what purpose.
  • AI excluded. Frequent in photography and illustration, where the medium's claim to document or to handcraft is the point. Expect requests for source files, RAWs or layered documents from shortlisted entrants — and treat an undisclosed AI pass through a "no AI" jury as what it is, a disqualification that follows you.

Whatever the policy, disclosure is the stable strategy: competitions compare files and processes more than entrants assume, and a disclosure requirement is also protection for you once your work starts winning.

Open calls that take digital work

Every call in this table accepts digital art and was checked on the organiser's own page; the date of that check is shown with each entry. Read the note on each: One Image One Winner, for one, does not accept AI-generated work.

The prizes to plan around

The two largest prizes for art made with technology run their calls in the first half of the year, so neither is open now. What follows is what their own pages say.

Prix Ars Electronica

The next submission phase begins in January 2027, and participation is free of charge. The 2027 categories are New Animation Art; Artificial Life & Intelligence; Digital Musics & Sound Art; and u19 – create your world, for young people resident in Austria. In 2026 each category carried up to €10,000 alongside the Golden Nica, and the extended deadline was 9 March. There is no separate AI policy: AI-related work has its own category in Artificial Life & Intelligence.

Lumen Prize

The 2027 call is not yet announced. The 2026 call ran from 26 January to 27 May 2026, with a $30,000 prize pool: a $15,000 Gold Award and three category prizes of $5,000. It is open to individual artists, collectives, studios and research teams, and treats AI as one technology among many rather than a separate question. Its winners' lists are a good map of where serious digital art currently stands.

Curatone.art open calls

Digital art enters on equal terms with every other medium in our calls, scored by the jury. A new themed call opens every few weeks; the one open now, with its deadline and entry terms, is on our open calls page. Selected works receive a numbered certificate and a permanent archive entry. On AI: say whether and how you used it. Partial use of AI tools is allowed, but fully AI-generated images used without further processing are not accepted.

What digital juries score, beneath the policy question

Authorship that survives questioning. Whatever the tools, a juror asks what decisions were yours. Work that exists because of your dataset, your iteration, your editing reads differently from a first-pull prompt — and process documentation is how the difference is shown.

Presentation discipline. Digital work is judged on the file you send: resolution, colour management and compression are your framing and varnish. The habits in our submission guide apply doubly here.

A record, same as everyone. The digital field moves fast, but careers in it are still built the slow way — documented selections, verifiable awards, a growing exhibition record. The medium is new; the arithmetic of credibility is not.

Plan the year around the fixed points, with Prix Ars and Lumen in the first half, and keep juried calls in between so the record grows while the long juries sit. And read every AI policy twice: in 2027, that paragraph is the one that decides whether your entry is judged at all.

Frequently asked questions

Are there free digital art competitions?

Yes. The table at the top of this page lists the calls that accept digital work and cost nothing to enter, by deadline. Prix Ars Electronica, one of the largest prizes for art made with technology, is also free to enter; its next submission phase opens in January 2027.

Can I submit AI-generated art to competitions?

It depends on the competition. Some treat AI as a medium and judge generative work as itself. Most allow AI as an assistant if the work is not made by AI alone and you explain how you used it. Others, often in photography and illustration, exclude it entirely. Read each call’s current rules before you enter.

Do I have to disclose that I used AI?

Where AI is allowed, almost always yes: many entry forms now ask how and for what purpose you used it. In a competition that excludes AI, undisclosed use leads to disqualification. Shortlisted entrants are often asked for source files, RAWs or layered documents.

What file format should I submit digital art in?

Follow the organiser’s specification exactly: format, pixel size and file-size limit. Digital work is judged on the file you send, so check resolution, colour and compression before you upload. Keep your layered or source files in case you are shortlisted. Our guide How to Submit Your Art to Competitions covers the details.

What are the biggest prizes for digital art?

Prix Ars Electronica and the Lumen Prize. In 2026 Prix Ars Electronica awarded up to €10,000 per category alongside the Golden Nica. The Lumen Prize had a $30,000 pool: a $15,000 Gold Award and three category prizes of $5,000. Both take entries in the first half of the year.

Does Curatone accept digital art?

Yes. Digital art is judged on equal terms with every other medium in our calls. You must say whether and how you used AI. Partial use of AI tools is allowed, but fully AI-generated images used without further processing are not accepted. Entry terms are set for each call and shown on its page; our open calls page lists whichever call is open now.
