Contemporary Macramé: A New Century of Art by Kateryna Malikova

Kateryna Malikova is a contemporary fiber artist, fashion designer, author, and educator whose work explores the artistic potential of macramé as a contemporary fine art medium. Drawing upon more than twenty-five years of experience in textile arts and garment design, she transforms one of the world's oldest knotting techniques into original works that bridge traditional craftsmanship with modern artistic expression.

Her practice challenges the conventional perception of macramé as a decorative craft by demonstrating its capacity to function as sculpture, textile composition, wearable art, and contemporary installation. Through carefully constructed patterns, refined materials, and meticulous hand-knotting, she creates works that emphasize rhythm, balance, texture, and spatial movement.

The four works presented in this exhibition investigate the dialogue between structure and emotion. Layers of interconnected knots create organic forms that shift with light and perspective, inviting viewers to experience the material as both a tactile object and a visual composition. In selected pieces, the incorporation of gold leaf introduces changing reflections that transform the artwork throughout the day, creating a dynamic relationship between the piece, its environment, and the viewer.

For Ms. Malikova, each artwork represents more than technical craftsmanship. It reflects the belief that handmade art possesses the ability to slow the pace of modern life, encourage contemplation, and create meaningful emotional connections. By combining historical textile traditions with a contemporary artistic vision, her work preserves an ancient cultural practice while expanding its role within today's fine art and design landscape.

Through exhibitions, publications, educational programs, and international artistic collaborations, Ms. Malikova continues to advance contemporary macramé as a recognized form of fine art, demonstrating that a single thread can become a powerful medium for artistic expression, innovation, and cultural preservation.
