  1. How would you introduce yourself in one phrase: who you are and what you create (genre, style, technique)?
I am Huiyuan Zhang , an artist creating contemporary ceramic works that embody Eastern Zen philosophy, using natural ash glazes and wood-firing as my core techniques.

"Golden Time" Series- Teapot. Dimension:13x 16cm

  2. What is special about your technique? Why this medium?
My practice centers on natural ash glazes (pine, rice straw, bamboo) and a dual-firing approach. In wood-firing, I allow flame, ash, and airflow to collaborate, imprinting each piece with unique, "impermanent" traces. This dialogue between natural force and human intention defines my work. Clay and fire are the most fundamental elements, connecting art directly to nature. Ceramics truthfully mirror the maker's state of mind. Through ash glazes and wood-firing, I transmute natural elements directly into artistic language, making it the perfect vessel for my philosophy of "oneness of object and self."

Through clay, fire, flame, and ash, Huiyuan Zhang explores the idea of impermanence and the unity between the maker and the object. Her use of pine, rice straw, and bamboo ash glazes allows natural elements to leave visible traces on each piece, making every work unique and unrepeatable. Ceramics, for Huiyuan, become a truthful reflection of the artist’s inner state and a direct expression of harmony between nature and self. Her practice invites the viewer to slow down and engage with the quiet, transformative power of material, time, and process.
