Meryem Berrada

We are pleased to introduce Meryem Berrada, a Canada-based artist whose work is deeply inspired by her Moroccan roots. Through oil painting, she captures the faces of North African people, the vibrant energy of Moroccan streets, and the harmony of traditional Moroccan tile art. Meryem works primarily with oils, using their softness and flexibility to explore texture, contrast, and quiet moments of focus. She kindly shared her thoughts and artistic process with us in this interview.

1. How would you introduce yourself in one phrase: who you are and what you create (genre, style, technique)?
   I am a Canadian-based artist who carries the warmth and spirit of Morocco with me to capture the faces of North African people, the energy of busy Moroccan streets, and the harmony found in traditional tile craftsmanship.
2. What is special about your technique? Why this medium?
   I love working with oil paints because they allow me to take my time, blend softly, rework areas, and play with contrasts between blurred regions and sharp details. The viscosity of oils lets me add texture where I want the viewer’s attention to linger, it’s a wonderfully flexible and expressive medium.
